The self-titled album “On” by the band On is a delightful journey back to the heyday of 1990s alternative rock, where grunge, punk, and raw energy ruled the music scene. Drawing inspiration from iconic bands such as Nirvana, The Pixies, PJ Harvey, and Garbage, “On” manages to capture the essence of that era while adding a distinctive and contemporary twist. The guitars pack a raw punk punch that instantly transports listeners to the underground grunge clubs of the ’90s. It’s impossible not to feel the gritty intensity and unbridled passion that echoes throughout the album. The band’s secret weapon, however, is their talented lead singer, Lucy Di Santo. Her vocals bring a refreshing and unique dimension to the album. In a landscape predominantly dominated by male-fronted grunge bands of that era, Lucy’s presence is a breath of fresh air. Her voice carries a sense of female beauty and vulnerability, contrasting the edginess of the instrumentals. The track “FLA” stands out as an excellent example of this duality. Lucy’s vocal delivery combines elements of pop sensibility with a grunge-inspired attitude, creating a compelling contrast that keeps the listener engaged. The juxtaposition of her melodic voice against the grungy backdrop creates a captivating dynamic that sets “On” apart from other alt-rock revival acts. While “On” effectively transports listeners back in time to the ’90s, it’s more than a mere nostalgic trip. It reminds us that the spirit of alternative rock is still alive and evolving. The album doesn’t just replicate the past; it reinvents it for a new generation of music lovers.
