As a devout fan of instrumental Progressive Metal, I was recently treated to an exhilarating auditory experience with Northaway’s track “Frost.” The song seamlessly melds various influences from Djent, classical music, and Metal, resulting in a mesmerizing symphony that left me spellbound from start to finish. Drawing inspiration from eminent bands like Fates Warning and Mekong Delta, Northaway has masterfully crafted a musical opus that transcends the boundaries of traditional metal. “Frost” opens with a chilling atmosphere that befits its name. Slowly, a haunting guitar melody begins, setting the stage for the journey that lies ahead. The Djent influences immediately make their presence felt as the track plunges into a relentless barrage of complex polyrhythms and punchy, low-tuned riffage. The band’s proficiency in executing these technical passages is astounding, reflecting the meticulous craftsmanship they possess. It’s clear that Northaway has taken the essence of Djent and integrated it seamlessly into their progressive metal foundation. What sets “Frost” apart from the multitude of instrumental metal tracks is the prominent influence of classical music. The band artfully infuses delicate and graceful violin passages throughout the song, offering a respite from the relentless heaviness while adding a layer of elegance and sophistication. The interplay between the classical elements and the sheer power of metal creates an enchanting juxtaposition that elevates the entire composition. The track builds to a captivating climax that culminates in an awe-inspiring display of technical virtuosity, yet never loses its emotional core. Despite the absence of lyrics, “Frost” manages to convey a wide spectrum of emotions, evoking a sense of wonder, reflection, and even a touch of melancholy.
