Noel Gallagher: Rock Stars ‘Will Die Out’

Noel Gallagher has rung the death knell on a particular kind of endangered species: the global rock star.
In a new interview in the U.K.’s Sunday Express, the rambunctious former Oasis member bemoans an industry “changed beyond all recognition.”
“Rock stardom will die,” Gallagher predicts, “because nobody with make enough money anymore to be rock stars.”

“Everybody will be jobbing musicians,” Gallagher continues. “It’s unbelievable. … The music business we signed in to does not exist anymore.

The singer/guitarist, who now fronts solo project Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, points to acts that came to prominence in the 1980s — names like Guns n’ Roses and Michael Jackson, who earned huge advances for their records — as being the last true rock stars.

“There was a way of making money and selling records that got happened upon in the 1960s, and it worked for 30-odd years,” Gallagher says. “Then all of a sudden, in under a decade, it’s gone, never to return.”
