Wágner – I Ran
Wágner, a native of New York City, is an established recording artist best known for his time as the lead singer of the alternative rock group Nerve in the middle of the 1990s. I recently had the pleasure of listening to the cover track “I Ran” by Wágner, a collaboration between the talented artist and multi-instrumentalist/producer Mauricio Mirapalheta. As a fan of both hard rock and the nostalgic sounds of the 80s and 90s, I was excited to discover how this rendition would breathe new life into the iconic hit originally performed by A Flock of Seagulls. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised by the result.
From the very beginning, it is evident that Wágner and Mauricio Mirapalheta have taken a bold and daring approach to the song. The track opens with a thunderous drum roll and powerful guitar riffs, instantly capturing the attention and setting the stage for an energetic and electrifying experience. The hard rock twist injected into “I Ran” brings a fresh perspective to the familiar melody, infusing it with a new level of intensity and vigor. Wágner’s vocals are undeniably impressive, effortlessly transitioning from the original soaring melodies to a more robust and gritty delivery. His passionate rendition adds a layer of raw emotion to the track, effectively conveying the underlying message of the lyrics. The strong vocal presence blends seamlessly with the instrumental arrangements, creating a harmonious balance between the forceful guitar solos, pounding drums, and driving basslines.
While “I Ran” by Wágner is an enjoyable and invigorating take on the original, it does deviate significantly from the new wave and synthpop sounds that characterized the original A Flock of Seagulls version. Some listeners may prefer the nostalgic charm of the original track, but I believe Wágner’s hard rock twist offers a refreshing and captivating alternative that showcases the versatility of the song. As a fan eagerly anticipating the release of the full album of 80s and 90s covers by Wágner and Mauricio Mirapalheta, I’m excited to see what other surprises they have in store. Additionally, the mention of working on original tracks for a future album release is promising, as it demonstrates their commitment to creative exploration and growth.
