Legendary Singer/Songwriter Team Of John Doe And Exene Cervenka Return With The Release Of Singing And Playing
Orange County based label, Moonlight Graham Records, has announced announce the release of a brand new full-length recording by the legendary duo of John Doe and Exene Cervenka of the seminal L.A. punk band, X. Singing And Playing will be released on April 10th and is available for $12.98 from iTunes and also from the Moonlight Graham Records web site at: www.moonlightgraham.net/singing-playing-cd.html.
John Doe and Exene Cervenka will celebrate the release of Singing And Playing with a special FREE acoustic performance at Amoeba Records in San Francisco on Tuesday, April 10th at 6:00pm. Amoeba Records is located at 1855 Haight Street, San Francisco, CA 94117. Details on the event are available at: www.amoeba.com/live-shows/performances/san-francisco/2012-april-10/john-doe-and-exene-cervenka/artist.html.
Singing And Playing offers 8 acoustic tracks that were originally recorded with producer Dave Way in 2010 and were previously only available on CD to fans that attended John and Exene’s series of Singing & Playing shows performed that summer. The record aptly showcases the duo’s signature harmonic style and tradition of crafting thoughtful and socially conscious lyrics layered over a simple backdrop of folk-inspired acoustic and electric rhythm guitar.
John Doe and Exene reflect on a thoughtful range of topics ranging from an unhealthy obsession with consumerism and materialism in “Never Enough,” to a sparse, mesmerizing re-work of an Exene solo staple about unrequited love, “The Sound of Coming Down.” Also included on the new release is an acoustic version of, “It Just Dawned On Me,” which the duo originally recorded with Canadian rockers The Sadies. Especially notable among the stand-out tracks are two new versions of the poignant X song, “See How We Are.” A stark new studio recording, which will also be Singing And Playing’s first single, as well as a second, live version, recorded at a Moonlight Graham in-store “hootenanny” that was headlined by John Doe and Exene in 2011.
“We’re extremely proud to mark Moonlight Graham Record’s first release with this album,” says Bart Silberman, President and Founder of Moonlight Graham. “John Doe and Exene have been a driving force in rock music for more than 30 years and their contributions have inspired legions of other artists around the world. We invite X fans, as well as roots music, folk and rock and roll aficionados, to enjoy this new release that follows in the tradition of Bob Dylan and Woodie Guthrie. And look for additional new releases from Moonlight Graham Records coming this summer!”
