KEVIN HASKINS – The Bauhaus Undead Discussion
1.Why did you decide to release an expanded version of the book “Bauhaus Undead”?
After the first run of books we were hearing from a lot of people who had missed the boat. I discussed the idea of printing a second run and my publisher could only agree to a relatively small run that proved to be financially unviable. I felt sad about the fact that a good number of fans would never have the chance to own the book. After a few weeks my publisher called me with an idea to make an expanded edition as he knew that it would be financially viable and so I agreed to begin work on it.
2. The new version features 78 additional pages, what do these pages contain?
I wrote seven new stories and the visual content includes: Exquisite Corpse drawings by the band, Bauhaus cassette sleeves, never seen before photographs that I took, posters and flyers, Selection of fan photos headed “We Love Our Audience”, Excerpts from a fans diary who used to come to every show, contact photo sheets of never seen before photos, collection of backstage passes from original member DavidJ and lots more.
3. How long did it take to complete the book and which process did you follow?
As this was an expanded version it didn’t take as long as the original. It took me about 9 months to gather all the memorabilia and photographs, work on the layout and write the stories. During the process I reached out to a couple of fans (Vincent Forrest and Andrew Brooksbank) and Graham Bentley who was our original lighting director/tour manager. I also dug deeper in to my collection and found a few gems that I had overlooked the first time. Once I had written the stories I reached out again to ask for photos and flyers to accompany the stories and completed hours of searching online for the same. I also did a lot of research to make sure that I had the sequence of events correct.
4. I noticed that this book contains everything, from backstage passes to fuel bills, contracts, etc. How did you manage to maintain this material all these years?
Well I have covered this in the previous question. The three main contributors and myself included are pack rats!
5. Is there additional material for a second book or a super expended version of the same title?
This is a super expanded version of the original!
6. What do the other band members think about your book?
They have all complemented me on it so I’m very happy about that.
7. Do you recall any special moments of your career that are important but you did not find any photos to include them in the book?
I have managed to include all the special memories and moments that were pivotal and important to me in the book. Also some humorous ones.
8. How did you feel upon writing the book?
It was quite a challenge and a roller coaster ride! It was also a lot of enjoyable work and many hours spent with research and writing. When I held the finished result in my hands it was almost like holding my baby!
9. Do you have any plans for a new book or new audio material with the Bauhaus?
I am contemplating writing a memoir which would be largely based around Bauhaus.
10. Do you still compose music for films and video games?
I haven’t composed music for a few years now as the book took up a lot of my time however I’m sure I will get back on that saddle sooner or later. I have entered the world of TV and Film producing. Im involved with a drama series set in Los Angeles and a music TV show.
