Early Radiohead demos appear online

Two Radiohead demos from 1986 have appeared on YouTube, showing the band in nascent form.

Klootme has posted two songs from the band – known then as On A Friday – on YouTube:Girl (In The Purple Dress)and Everybody Knows.

She describes them as “Baby Radiohead minus Jonny with saxophonist Raz Peterson from the same school.”

Indeed, the two tracks sounds remarkably similar to the band’s first records – albeit with added, and rather unexpected, saxophone.

Klootme explains on YouTube, “My husband was given the tape by the band when he was at school with them. They were all good friends. We used to go and see them play in Oxford at Jerico Tavern and The Old Fire-station.”

She describes Everybody Knows as “The one that shows all of their harmonising potential and personally my favourite.”

Intriguingly, Klootme says the copyright in on the demo tape is “O.A.F. Records”, which raises the popularity of whether they could get an official release.

Both videos have now been viewed more than 10,000 times and the feedback from viewers has been largely positive.

MegaCrasher 300 said that Girl (In The Purple Dress) “sounds like something that could fit well on In Rainbows, sans that sax solo”.

Mrbrockpoters added, “I’d rather listen to more of this than their current sound.”
