The\u00a0 recorded\u00a0 music\u00a0 industry,\u00a0 as\u00a0 any\u00a0 other\u00a0 content\u00a0 industry,\u00a0 lives\u00a0 on\u00a0 the\u00a0 creativity\u00a0 of\u00a0 individuals and it is of the utmost importance \u2013 if we want to see a sustainable and healthy\u00a0 content industry continue in Europe \u2013 to make sure that a fair share of the value created\u00a0 finds its way back to those individuals.  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p>Artists and their representatives have been fighting now for years to try to get information\u00a0 on the deals done between platforms and phonographic producers (labels) so that they in\u00a0 turn can negotiate for a \u2018fair share\u2019 of the value their work generates. The recorded music industry is not buy-sell like supermarkets who buy products from\u00a0 suppliers and sell them in turn to customers, keeping the margin.\u00a0 Instead, Creators\u00a0 generally receive a royalty which is supposed to reflect a share of the value generated\u00a0 from the commercial exploitation of their work.<\/p>\n<p>In most cases that royalty, along with an advance, is accepted in exchange for an\u00a0 exclusive assignment of copyright which leaves the Artist wholly dependent on the label to\u00a0 act in their best interests. However, whereas Managers, for example, have a fiduciary duty of care to their artists,\u00a0 labels do not.
