Arcade Fire<\/strong> was profiled<\/span><\/span><\/a> in The New Yorker<\/em> by Sasha Frere-Jones. Some argued that the piece was against major labels, because Arcade Fire existed mostly outside their walls.\u00a0 Others though that it dispelled the myth of the DIY artist, as\u00a0 the group wasn\u2019t truly doing it by themselves; they had assistance and licensed their music to Merge. In a recent interview with Pitchfork<\/em>, writer Ryan Dombal<\/strong> asked the group about this\u2014what was \u2018their take\u2019 on that?<\/p>\n

“Major labels just lost their way<\/strong>. It’s like the housing bubble. They lost a sense of the fundamentals. They were just… throwing money around. They weren’t thinking<\/strong> about putting out good music or embracing new things.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Another interesting insight comes shortly thereafter:<\/p>\n

“When we were getting courted in the early days <\/strong>of Funeral<\/em>, we would get taken to these dinners, and it was just like, ‘We’ll take the dinner, but who’s paying for this?’ I guess Led Zeppelin is<\/strong>… <\/span><\/span>It’s such a weird thing.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The group has also been catching up on their reading:<\/p>\n

“[Major labels would] probably be doing fine without the Internet<\/strong>. The way they handled the Internet was just boneheaded…\u00a0I just read Greg Kot’s book about downloading<\/strong>, Ripped<\/em>, and they were not smart<\/strong>.” <\/span>Read the rest<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n
