The song represents the energy and glamour of its subject, Lennie Dale, an American-born dancer, vocalist, and choreographer who rose to stardom in Brazil’s bossa nova and later acted as the theatrical driving force behind Dzi Croquettes. In contrast to songs that develop over time, “Lennie Dale” instantly opens with voice and music, a decision that involves the listener in its happy atmosphere. The vocal lines have a connection to The Beatles with their melodic simplicity and brilliant harmonies, but the arrangement is lush and layered, recalling the orchestral reach of Yes in its orchestration. This creates music that is both ambitious and friendly, resulting in art rock with a pop heart. “Lennie’s like a rocket, someone lit the fuse / Future in his pocket, no-one left to lose,” the song’s lyrics represent, making him seem like a comet. He is presented in these lines as a brave and creative man who overcomes hardship using charisma, song, and movement. The catchphrase “Fly Fly Fly Lennie Dale” becomes an anthem and a slogan, representing both freedom and flight. In the end, “Lennie Dale” is a successful tribute as well as a stand-alone work of art rock-pop. It celebrates a significant but unappreciated figure through music that carries warmth, optimism, and an air of theatricality, much like Dale himself.

Lennie Dale (Fly Fly Fly) by James Clarke Five

Photo Credit: photo by James Hughes

https://jamesclarkefive.bandcamp.com

https://www.facebook.com/JamesClarkeFive

https://www.instagram.com/jamesclarkefive

James Hughes, the former pianist and vocalist for Liverpool’s Cherry Boys and Exhibit B, pays…

[14,5
3597
post-28417","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-pop-rock-reviews","category-reviews","tag-james-clarke-five
["GET
