It begins with a rush of classic rock attitude, with riff-heavy guitars straight out of the 1970s that recall the toughness and greatness of Deep Purple and other hard rock hitters. The playing has a confidence that sets the atmosphere for an essential rock number…until Mason begins to alter the formula. When the vocals arrive, the atmosphere becomes darker. The song goes into gothic/dark wave space, with the melancholic vocals creating deep shadows on the typically headbanging rock basis. This combination of strong guitar work and sad vocals produces a strange contrast, as if two distinct bands are competing; one performing in the sun, the other under the moonlight. The outcome is a sound push-and-pull that keeps the listener on edge, and never knowing which side will take over. Mason’s style approaches storytelling, with an observational in nature, slightly distant tone typical of The Fall. It’s not about shouting out loud choruses; it’s about putting you in a story and allowing you walk through a bit bizarre, somewhat scary world. The production contributes significantly to building that environment, referencing 1980s ideas with rich flanger effects and a cosmic haze that gives the track its “Martian” vibe. You can almost imagine it playing over the end credits of an obscure cult sci-fi film. By the end of the song, you have a sense that you’ve heard something more than just a rock song; it’s a combination of periods, light and darkness, earthly riffs and space atmosphere. “The Funky Martians” reminds us that genre borders are designed to be cracked, and Zachary Mason does it with optimism and curiosity. It’s retro, alien, and certainly catchy in its own weird way.

https://zacharymasonmusic.com

https://www.facebook.com/ZacharyMasonmusic

https://www.instagram.com/zacharymasonsmusic

Zachary Mason’s “The Funky Martians” is one of those rare tracks that can take you…

[14,5
226,284,4135
post-28075","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-pop-rock-reviews","category-reviews","tag-classic-rock","tag-goth","tag-zachary-mason
["GET
