(Live)’

Craig’s List Jawn: ¡Nay! / ¡Yay!, recorded live at Backroom Studios, is a wild, chaotic, and strangely hypnotic performance that refuses classification for more than a few seconds. The song begins with an explosion of distorted guitar that combines Led Zeppelin’s iconic hard rock confidence with the raw strength of Rage Against the Machine. From that point on, Ecce Shnak ignores the rules. The avant-garde vocal duet, an extremely expressive, almost dramatic dialogue that gets inspiration from Frank Zappa’s unusual genius, is what really makes this composition special. It’s more of a performance art event than a song, pushed by chaotic energy, surprising changes, and multiple layers of meaning that are hidden from view. The voices switch between comedy and drama, allowing listeners to simultaneously laugh, wonder, and gaze with confusion. The phrasing, melodic confusion, and the almost operatic performance of the vocal parts all have a surprise neoclassical influence that alert listeners beneath the surface. It’s strangely beautiful ridiculous, and dramatic. The bass work provides a dark base to the otherwise disorganized soundtrack by adding dimensions and scale, occasionally getting into Grunge space. You’re left with more questions than answers by the end of the track, but that appears to be the purpose. Craig’s List aims to alarm, shock you out of your musical rut, and break the lines between performance art and concerts rather than to provide peace.

Photo Credit: Ecce Shnak photo by Tommy Krause

https://www.facebook.com/ecceshnak

https://ecceshnak.bandcamp.com/music

https://www.instagram.com/ecceshnak

Craig’s List Jawn: ¡Nay! / ¡Yay!, recorded live at Backroom Studios, is a wild, chaotic,…

[14,5
312,4297,2721,125
post-27808","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-pop-rock-reviews","category-reviews","tag-avant-garde","tag-ecce-shnak","tag-math-rock","tag-prog
["GET
