Written during a moment of meditation in Liverpool, the song expresses the puzzled emotion of a spirit caught between breakdown and recovery. Musically, &#8220;Fatally&#8221; begins with an enigmatic\u00a0mix of electric and acoustic guitar forms, creating an indirect reference to the late 1960s psych-rock origins but remaining strongly rooted in a British context. The verses are dark and personal inviting the spirit\u00a0of Suede or The Verve, but the chorus emerges with stronger guitars that represent Brian May&#8217;s melodic lines. Max Raffa speaks with openness and balance. His pleasant, sad, and moving tone fits nicely within the Britpop legacy, giving the lyrics a fragile authenticity. Lines like &#8220;I can&#8217;t believe I&#8217;ve tossed my life away&#8221; and &#8220;I feel alone, the world breaks down on me&#8221; sound like confessions, sung with the directness of someone who has gone through the fire and is still trying to name the scars. What characterizes &#8220;Fatally&#8221; is how it contrasts elegance and misery. The arrangement is simple and precise, nevertheless the message it depicts is far from neat. It&#8217;s about rehabilitation as a never-ending cycle, as identity broken by both personal and other\u00a0choices.
