The EP, that combines elements of post-punk, industrial, dream pop, and acoustic vibes, seems like a trip through mental tides, with each track giving depth to a greater story of development, loss, and rebirth. Nieland creates a cinematic state of mind full of “color” and strength as soon as possible. The process of making achieves the perfect equilibrium between passion and improvement. There’s a dark theatricality here that brings to mind Christian Death’s depressing beauty, David Bowie’s ethereal style, and Radiohead’s philosophical layering at its most abstract. Despite these references, Nieland’s voice and vision are all entirely his own, formed by love, doubt, and evolution. Throughout the EP, the words act as both confession and clashes, moving between primal images and intellectual thinking. The themes of disgrace, broken identity, natural sorrow, and emotional rebirth are handled with beautiful excellence. Musically, the EP is active and diverse. Industrial rhythms and damaged guitars fade into ethereal acoustics and echoed melodies. The EP frequently mixes brutality with elegance, with moments of loudness and mayhem morphing into beautiful, guitar-driven soundscapes. There is an intentional push-and-pull that captures the deep meaning of the songs: memories crashing with reality, isolation dissolving into uncertain connection.

The Ocean Understands by Charlie Nieland

Photo Credit: Charlie Nieland photo by Alice Teeple

http://charlienieland.com/

https://charlienieland.bandcamp.com

https://www.facebook.com/CharlieNieland

Charlie Nieland’s The Ocean Understands is an alarming look at memory, trauma, identity, and change….

[14,5
1515,533,284
post-27652","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-pop-rock-reviews","category-reviews","tag-charlie-nieland","tag-dream-pop","tag-goth
["GET
