The track begins with a violent shock: loud, fuzzed-out guitars rush into the mix, immediately recreating the raw power of the 1990s alt-rock era. The orchestration\u00a0has an unusual urgency to it, a rough speed that feels\u00a0nostalgic. However, just as the listener gets into that distortion-inspired\u00a0trip, Lloyd offers a surprise contrast: pleasant vocal lines deeply rooted in 1960s psychedelic era. His singing style is calm, almost dreamy at moments, providing a distinct contrast to the aggressive guitar work. This push-pull, the cover of old melody against the harshness of current guitar tones, gives &#8220;Laugh So Loud&#8221; its particular bite. Lyrically, the song explores confusion and inner chaos. Lines like &#8220;Fine \/ Not fine \/ Not real fine&#8221; repeat with almost spell-like strength, based on a mental tug-of-war between pretending and breaking. The refrain &#8220;Are you the exception to the rule?&#8221; emphasizes\u00a0a broader criticism of society, while the last couplets, &#8220;When you cry, you cry so loud \/ Empty head in the cloud&#8221; touch a fatal emotional chord. Each repetition has an attractive effectiveness, similar to cycling thoughts that refuse to let go.
