Trevor Tanner and Paul Clark\u2014two original members of the famous ’80s band The Bolshoi\u2014reunite with a surprising debut under a new name, but one based in the same melancholic\u00a0kindness \u00a0that made their previous work so admired. While the name refers to their history, the album is far from a nostalgia trip; rather, it is sophisticated. The album establishes a spiritual \u00a0tone from the very beginning. Tanner and Clark draw from their post-punk roots, integrating melodic rock, progressive storytelling, and dark atmospheric sounds. The compositions are sophisticated and bright, with guitars similar to a cinematic style. There’s a\u00a0dramatic quality going on here. Tracks move across genres, driven by an integrated sound vision that seems\u00a0classic. There are elements of New Age , 1970s soft rock, and the gothic aspects\u00a0of musicians such as Nick Cave, all filtered via The Bolshoi Brothers’ unique prism. Strings expand as appropriate, acoustic and electric guitars move between foreground and background, and percussion ranges from jazzy elegance to ethereal power.
