Tom Murray (lead vocals, synthesizer, electronic percussion) and Cheryl Gelover (synthesizer, backing vocals) combine &#8220;smashed&#8221;\u00a0lyrical pieces with sad vibes\u00a0to create a realistic claustrophobic soundscape. The song jumps right into dramatic vocal lines, moving synths, and ethereal guitar sounds. From the first beat, the atmosphere is heavy, as if you&#8217;re walking through a layer of fog, with every sound designed\u00a0with skepticism. The musician&#8217;s guitar lines do not be dominant, but rather create a cinematic mood\u00a0that enhances the frightening atmosphere, as if you&#8217;re crawling through an enigmatic memory. Tom Murray&#8217;s vocal style is particularly interesting, as it is both theatrical and frightening. His voice has an appropriately controlled tension that is comparable of the early Scott Walker or the more avant-garde areas of post-punk. The percussion is similarly interacting. It grooves just enough to keep things moving, but it avoids monotony through the use of jazz elements and trip-hop variations that change the song into a noir-lounge rhythm. The combination of styles improves the depressing atmosphere, making it appear tempting rather than unpleasant. Lyrically, Never Knew is somewhere between memory and myth. The repeated phrase &#8220;I trusted you \/ they never knew&#8221; becomes a chorus of betrayal and loneliness, highlighting the song&#8217;s key themes: divided truth, broken trust, and internal fear. Never Knew sounds like the dark, experimental soundtrack to an unable to dissolve mystery.
