Red Lorry Yellow Lorry<\/a>, the seminal post-punk band from Leeds, UK, have just released \u2018Driving Black (Ding\u2019s Remix)\u2019 \u2013 their first new single since \u2018Talking Back\u2019 (1991). \u00a0\u2018Driving Black (Ding\u2019s Remix)\u2019 is an exclusive mix by the band\u2019s bassist and producer,\u00a0Simon \u2018Ding\u2019 Archer<\/strong>; also of\u00a0The Fall<\/strong>,\u00a0Pixies<\/strong>,\u00a0PJ Harvey<\/strong>,\u00a01919<\/strong>, etc. The new track dropped on Friday 4 October for Bandcamp Day, launching presales for\u00a0Red Lorry Yellow Lorry<\/a>\u2019s forthcoming EP,\u00a0Driving Black<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked recently how the band approach writing singles like \u2018Driving Black\u2019, longtime guitarist and cowriter\u00a0Dave \u2018Wolfie\u2019 Wolfenden<\/strong>\u00a0told\u00a0Devolution Magazine<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(UK):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe never wrote songs with singles in mind. To us they are just songs that we thought good enough to release. Some songs seem better suited as singles. I think when everything is ready you pick what seems suitable. For a single, you want the maximum impact in a short space of time, and to get people curious about the other stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Red Lorry Yellow Lorry<\/a>\u00a0formed in 1981. Known for their dark, jarring, minimalist sound, the Lorries carved out their niche with a unique blend of punk, post-punk, and industrial influences. Led by founding member\u00a0Chris Reed<\/strong>\u2019s cavernous, brooding vocals; and by Reed and longtime guitarist and cowriter\u00a0Dave \u2018Wolfie\u2019 Wolfenden<\/strong>\u00a0angular, droning, wall-of-sound guitars; their early trademark style was driven along by grinding bass, and an almost industrial hybrid of drum-machines and primal live percussion. Later output saw Reed and Wolfenden\u2019s co-writing partnership mature and develop towards a more melodic, song-driven direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The band achieved critical acclaim and significant cultural influence in the 1980s, with the albums\u00a0Talk About the Weather<\/em>\u00a0(1985),\u00a0Paint Your Wagon<\/em>\u00a0(1986),\u00a0Nothing Wrong<\/em>\u00a0(1988), and\u00a0Blow<\/em>\u00a0(1989), before calling it a day with fifth album,\u00a0Blasting Off<\/em>\u00a0(1992). At the height of their influence, singles like \u2018Monkeys on Juice\u2019, \u2018Hollow Eyes\u2019, \u2018Spinning Round\u2019, \u2018Cut Down\u2019 and \u2018Crawling Mantra\u2019 were among the band\u2019s biggest indie chart hits, while \u2018Talk About the Weather\u2019, \u2018Walking on Your Hands\u2019, \u2018Nothing Wrong\u2019 and \u2018Temptation\u2019 became enduring underground anthems. Over the years,\u00a0Red Lorry Yellow Lorry<\/a>\u00a0built a dedicated following that remains with them to this day; their uncompromising sound leaving a lasting influence on the darker edges of post-punk, alternative rock, and gothic rock, despite the band rejecting the goth tag themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0Driving Black<\/em>\u00a0EP is released 6 December via\u00a0COP International<\/a>, in 12\u201d vinyl and digital download formats, and serves as a tantalizing prelude to the band\u2019s highly anticipated new album,\u00a0Strange Kind of Paradise<\/em>: due out February 2025. The six-track\u00a0Driving Black<\/em>\u00a0EP offers three exclusive, non-album tracks (\u2018Safe as Houses\u2019, \u2018Living with Spiders\u2019, and \u2018Piece of My Mind\u2019); alongside three unique mixes of songs from the forthcoming album. Lead single \u2018Driving Black\u2019 receives two exclusive mixes for the EP: one from Ding, and the other from legendary producer\u00a0John Fryer<\/strong>, renowned for his work with\u00a0Depeche Mode<\/strong>,\u00a0Nine Inch Nails<\/strong>, and\u00a0Cocteau Twins<\/strong>. \u2018Chickenfeed\u2019 meanwhile gets the remix treatment from German dark indie rock outfit\u00a0The Halo Trees<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Featuring a cover painting by Wolfie, the\u00a0Driving Black<\/em>\u00a0EP has been pressed as a limited-edition coloured vinyl 12\u201d EP \u2013 only 1,000 copies available worldwide. With its stunning four-color sleeve, two-page inlay, and PVC collector\u2019s bag, this release is destined to become an instant collector\u2019s item for Lorries fans and vinyl enthusiasts alike.
