Distance as a measure of time and place informs Kelly Finnigan<\/strong>\u2019s new album A Lover Was Born<\/em><\/strong> with a grit and grace that turns passion into virtue. The latest solo release from The Monophonics frontman roots itself in the best traditions of midwest soul labels like King, Curtom, Dakar, and the Bodie Recording Company. A Lover Was Born<\/em> is a testimony that these deep cut grooves are not resigned to nostalgia, instead, they are at the burning heart of longing and hope. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The journey Finnigan takes listeners on over Lover<\/em>\u2019s eleven tracks echo the state of motion and growth since his solo debut, The Tales People Tell <\/em>(2019). These two records bookend a prolific period of output, including a pair of Monophonics albums, a Christmas album, a mixtape, and a full slate of producing other artists (The Ironsides, Alanna Royale, The Sextones). \u201cThere\u2019s nothing like making records,\u201d says Finnigan. \u201cIt feels like that\u2019s my purpose \u2014 the reason I was put on this earth.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Written in California, Ohio, and Staten Island, Kelly Finnigan collaborated with old friends in and outside the studio. \u201cI enjoy working alone but it\u2019s not how you want to make a record\u2026almost everybody I brought in for this album I\u2019ve worked with, toured with or spent a great deal of time with.\u201d Max<\/strong> and Joe Ramey<\/strong> (The Ironsides), Jimmy James<\/strong> (Parlor Greens), Sergio Rios <\/strong>(Org\u00f5ne), Joey Crispiano<\/strong> (Dap Kings) and Jay Mumford<\/strong> (aka J-Zone) all contribute to the overall sound of A Lover Was Born<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dramatic influences like Isaac Hayes (check out the piano on \u201cBe Your Own Shelter\u201d) and Jerry Ragovoy are chopped and folded into Northern Soul uptempo numbers to create stompers like \u201cGet a Hold of Yourself\u201d or \u201cChosen Few\u201d. Finnigan\u2019s take on Deep Soul is captured brilliantly on \u201cWalk Away from Me\u201d and \u201cLove (Your Pain Goes Deep)\u201d, while Boom Bap pervades on hard hitters \u201cHis Love Ain\u2019t Real\u201d & \u201cCold World\u201d. Slower songs such as \u201cLet Me Count the Reasons\u201d, the emotional \u201cAll That\u2019s Left\u201d, and the soul-stirring album closer \u201cCount Me Out\u201d show the honest and tender side that has become Finnigan\u2019s calling card. All the while, the voice is raw and earthy \u2014 in the best tradition of R&B shouters like Otis Redding, Lee Moses, and David Ruffin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The songs on A Lover Was Born<\/em> reconfigure the spliced and sampled DNA of hip hop (extracted by crate diggers like Dilla and RZA) to create something new, underscoring both the spectrum and depth of soul while making a case to the timelessness of Finnigan\u2019s sound. – Jim Warner<\/p>\n\n\n\n
