Trevor Rabin, the South African guitarist, singer, multi-musician, writer and producer, recently announced \u2018Rio\u2019, his first solo album of vocal material in 34 years, set for release on October 6th,\u00a02023 worldwide.

Trevor comments: \u201cFor this song I was thinking of the horror of politics and politicians. Once Vinnie Calaiuta played drums on this, it inspired me to redo some of\u00a0 the instrumentation. Vinnie\u2018s performance lifted this song beyond what I\u00a0 imagined. I utilized the strings at the end of the track to start the ARW live shows.\u201d

Given that his previous vocal-led solo album, \u2018Can\u2019t Look Away\u2019, was released in 1989 (2012\u2019s \u2018Jacaranda\u2019 was all-instrumental), Rabin has kept us waiting for more than three decades for a follow-up. Trevor admits that there was pressure from all sides, including his own family, to have speeded up the process. However, the delay is excusable. Since leaving Yes following the \u2018Talk\u2019 album in 1994 and largely as a prequel to touring as part of ARW in 2016, the guitarist entered the time-consuming world of movie soundtracks. Not just any old movies, either. Trevor\u2019s name appears as composer for such blockbusters as Con Air, Armageddon, Remember the Titans, Enemy Of The State, Deep Blue Sea, Glory Road, and Gone In 60 Seconds and both National Treasure movies, amongst many others. \u201cOver the past ten years I was having ideas, concepts that I couldn\u2019t implement due to my busy schedule,\u201d he explains, adding: \u201cTo be honest, those years flew by in a flurry. I knew that this was the time, and once I found my momentum I worked on the album 24\/7.\u201d\u00a0 The process proved a labour of love and as with his first and second solo records, \u2018Trevor Rabin\u2019 and \u2018Face To Face\u2019 (from 1977 and \u201979 respectively), Rabin handled just about all of the instruments himself.

Stylistically, \u2018Rio\u2019\u2013 is tough to categorize. Besides guitar-driven rock-meets-pop, \u2018Goodbye\u2019 is Country & Western with an edgy drive, while \u2018Tumbleweed\u2019 begins in a burst of harmonies. No wonder its working title was \u2018The Demographic Nightmare\u2019.

\u201cI wanted to get into many different areas,\u201d Rabin states. \u201cOf course there are \u2018prog things\u2019, but overall there are a lot of styles going on.\u201d

As mentioned, Trevor plays the majority of the instruments on the record. However, on drums for a number of tracks is Lou Molino, while Trevor also contributes some drums and percussion. Vinnie Calaiuta provides drums on \u2018Push\u2019, and Rabin\u2019s son Ryan Rabin helped out with some of the most important percussive arrangements. Along the way Trevor also drafted in a couple of friends, Dante Marchi and Liz Constantine, to sing back up on two songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
