No stranger to the underground music scene – whether it be Manchester-centric, UK-wide or even further\u00a0afoot\u00a0in the many territories the band has toured through since forming back in 1983, deathrock \/ postpunk staples\u00a0<\/strong>Inca Babies<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>are back with a new single –\u00a0‘Crawling Garage Gasoline’<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and its\u00a0b-side\u00a0‘Grunt Cadillac Hotel’<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0are a welcome preview of the band’s\u00a0eighth studio album\u00a0\u2018Swamp Street Soul\u2019<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0The accompanying film was produced by Harry Stafford at\u00a0NoiseBoy Studio<\/strong>s in Salford.

Produced by\u00a0Simon \u2018Ding\u2019 Archer<\/strong><\/a>(The Fall, PJ Harvey)\u00a0<\/strong>at\u00a06Db Studios<\/strong><\/a>, the clarity and fullness of sound on this\u00a011-track offering\u00a0surpasses that of any previous Inca release. Last month, they released the\u00a0ead track\u00a0‘Walk In The Park’<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0with a strutting blues beat, infectious guitar lick and bluesy post-punk musings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This ‘Crawling Garage Gasoline’ is a revisiting of a 1980s inca\u2019s classic, all bluster and \u2018pedal to the metal\u2019 speed punk. It\u2019s a tale of the descent into the maelstrom but don\u2019t forget to get some gas along the way. The urge to re-record this came from its popularity as a live song at recent Inca gigs, now paired down and with more bite, it has certainly stood the test of time. It was originally released on the ‘Surfin\u2019 in Locustland’ EP<\/strong> back in 1985 and was also recorded for the Incas’ third John Peel session in June that year,” says Harry Stafford<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today Inca Babies is a trio made up of Harry Stafford<\/strong> (guitar, keys, vocals), bassist Vince Hunt (A Witness, Blue Orchids)<\/strong> and Rob Haynes (The Membranes, Goldblade)<\/strong> on drums and percussion. It’s been seven years since the final release of their Death Blues Trilogy – ‘Death Message Blues’ <\/strong><\/a>(2010), ‘Deep Dark Blue’<\/strong> <\/a>(2012) and ‘The Stereo Plan’ <\/strong><\/a>(2014).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Swamp Street Soul\u2019 takes us across a tightly euphoric path of differing moods and new arenas of guitar songwriting. This long-player continues the band’s explosive exploration of goth-punk and death-rock and trash blues with epic cautionary ballads. Frontman Harry Stafford has written a fulsome collection of tall tales of madness, fearfully larger-than-life characters and extravagant yarns, backed by a no-nonsense rhythm section locked into a pounding backbeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A vibrant part of Britain’s early postpunk \/ death rock scene, Inca Babies’ story began in 1983 in the now-legendary deck-access flats of Hulme (Manchester), which were intended as \u2018cities in the sky\u2019 for young executives but quickly became cockroach-infested slums mostly inhabited by students, artists, and drug addicts. True to DIY ethos, they self-released their debut single ‘Interior’ in 1984.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a further six singles and four albums over five years, all of which entered the UK Indie Charts, they also recorded four sessions for BBC’s John Peel show in 1984-1988 before calling it quits. Since reforming in 2007, they’ve released three albums and toured extensively around Europe, including Russia, as well as North America and India. Renewed interest in the Incas was propelled by Cherry Red Records<\/strong> ‘Best Of\u2019 compilation release \u2018Inca Babies 1983-87: Plutonium\u2019<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Crawling Garage Gasoline’ is out now, available digitally everywhere, including\u00a0Spotify<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<\/strong>Apple Music<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Bandcamp<\/strong><\/a>.
