Liverpool-based The Room in the Wood<\/a> <\/strong>present their new single ‘Fun of The Fair’<\/strong><\/a>, the second taste of their forthcoming album ‘We\u2019re The Martians, Now’<\/strong><\/a>. Stomping beats with nods to glam rock, name-checking T-Rex, 70s reminiscence and youth gang flair – all the right ingredients for a 3 minute POP song! The accompanying video was created by the wonderful Mark Jordan<\/strong>, who set things in scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Room in the Wood is, at its core, Paul Cavanagh<\/strong> and Dave Jackson<\/strong>, who are once again working together after a huge gap since their post-punk band The Room<\/strong> split back in 1985. This past year has been highly prolific for them, writing 30+ new songs, putting out three releases, issuing four videos, and performing live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About this new single, Dave Jackson<\/strong> says this album was inspired by \u201cMy youth, growing up in Liverpool in 70s. The music was always Tamla, Glam Rock etc blaring loud. An era where gangs of smoothies, troggs and grebos roamed the parks you had to bribe over 18s to get you alcohol from off licences. Big party seven pint cans of beer that you had to open with a screwdriver and a brick when you realised no one had brought an opener. Being chased by gangs of boot boys and the mysterious magic of being out in the night when you\u2019re young, doing stuff you\u2019re not supposed to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the tail-end of 2019, The Room in the Wood released ‘Charmed’<\/strong><\/a>, a beautiful Burt Bacharach-esque ballad about the elite of our society – a timely message given the growing disparity seen in the UK and elsewhere.The accompanying video was created by Mark Jordan<\/strong> and features footage of Dave Jackson and Paul Cavanagh, filmed by Sarah Ryan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This single features ace drumming by Colin George Lamont <\/strong>(Mark Lanegan, Dave Gahan)<\/strong>, charming flute by Simon James <\/strong>and heavenly backing vocals by Helena Jacks<\/strong>. Recorded and mixed by Steve Powell (Michael Head & the Red Elastic Band) <\/strong>at his Liverpool-based Ark Studios<\/strong><\/a>, it was mastered byPete Maher<\/strong><\/a> (Barry Adamson, The Alarm).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This single follows their their sci-fi inspired ‘Mars EP’<\/strong><\/a>, released in late 2018. Prior to this, the Liverpool outfit released their debut album ‘The Room in the Wood’<\/strong><\/a> and the ‘Magical Thinking’ EP<\/strong><\/a> earlier that same year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dave Jackson<\/strong> has been writing and recording since his teens – with The Room, 051, Benny Profane, Dust, Dead Cowboys, as Dave Jackson & The Cathedral Mountaineers<\/strong>, and also with former Shack guitarist John Head<\/strong>. He has recorded and released 10 albums with these various incarnations, notched up 7 John Peel sessions with The Room and Benny Profane, and has also appeared on the Whistle Test, Janice Long and Saturday Live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jackson has also toured the UK, Europe and the USA extensively with The Fall, The Violent Femmes, Aztec Camera, The Lemonheads and The Wedding Present. He currently teaches creative writing at Liverpool John Moores University and has developed his novel ‘Violet City’ as a low-budget fantasy feature film.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul Cavanagh<\/strong> has performed as a solo instrumentalist as Cabin in the Woods <\/strong>and as one of Mike Badger\u2019s Shady Trio<\/strong>. He worked with The Room drummer Alan Wills at Deltasonic Records with The Coral<\/strong> and The Zutons<\/strong>. Paul has also recorded 4 John Peel sessions and released albums with Top, It\u2019s Immaterial, Moongoose<\/strong>, as well as critically acclaimed singles with Gloss<\/strong>. He also played guitar for Chinese Religion, The Balcony and Ludus.  

‘Fun of the Fair\u201c will be available across music stores and streaming platforms such as Spotify<\/a> <\/strong>and Apple Music<\/strong><\/a>, as well as Bandcamp<\/strong><\/a>., on March 6. On April 10, the full album ‘We’re The Martians, Now’ will be released on coloured vinyl and CD, and also digitally. It can already be pre-ordered via Bandcamp<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
