The Most Popular Songs Played By Musicians In Each State, Revealed By Musicnotes.com

Dialect, cuisine and fashion tastes can vary by state, and the songs people like to play are no different, according to a recent list of the distinctively best-selling sheet music titles by Musicnotes.com, the world’s top digital sheet music e-retailer and publisher. Musicnotes crafted a list of the “Uniquely Popular Sheet Music by State (Plus D.C.)” to expound on the breadth of its sheet music catalogue, as well as the diversity of its sheet music audience.

“What we’re seeing is that people want to play music that speaks to them and touches them on a personal level,” said Bill Aicher, Chief Growth Officer for Musicnotes. “For example, musicians in New York are more likely to download sheet music for Billy Joel’s ‘New York State of Mind’ than musicians in any other state.”

“Musicnotes.com is committed to maintaining the largest selection of digital sheet music titles, in order to best serve all musicians, in both the US and around the world,” Aicher added.

As expected, some states’ song picks were not surprising—such as the popularity of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” in West Virginia. In a surprising twist, however, “Good Morning Baltimore” from the hit Broadway musical ‘Hairspray’ did make the company’s “Uniquely Popular” list, but not in Maryland. It was the most frequently downloaded in a different Atlantic Coast state—New Jersey.

To compile the list, Musicnotes looked at the top 50 selling songs from January 1, 2013 to March 13, 2013 for each state. They then excluded titles appearing on their all-around best-sellers list (to focus on those songs whose popularity was unique to the individual state). Sheet music selections statistically more popular in each state than in any other state, based on total number of downloads, were deemed the winners.

Launched in 1998, Musicnotes.com offers nearly 250,000 officially licensed downloadable sheet music arrangements to nearly four million customers worldwide.
